John Howells, Age 23

Private, 200954, 1/4th Battalion, King's Shropshire Light Infantry.

K.S.L.I Regiment Cap Badge.

John was born and still lived in Dawley at the time of his enlistment.

He was another of the Dawley men who died as a result of the battle of Welsh Ridge, Cambrai. He passed away on the 31st December 1917 of wounds received the day before and lies in the Rocquigny-Equancourt Rd Cemetery in grave VIII.E.22.

In the 1901 census John is living with his father Thomas who is a coal miner hewer and mother Harriet Howells at High Street Shifnal (near to number 92) aged 5 and his place of birth is St George, in the 1911 census the family is now living at Old Park, Dawley, no birthplace on this census, John’s pension was paid to his mother Mrs. Harriet Howells, 11, Colliers Row, Old Park, Dawley.
